On April 3, the Merakey Autism Center in Dearborn, MI began a two-week door decorating contest to showcase the creativity of the clients and staff. This activity provided a fun and challenging way for staff and kids to manage their time and to work as a team to make a shared vision become a reality. The doors featured sensory elements to encourage interaction and different building materials to challenge the kids to think creatively. This activity celebrated Autism Awareness Month, and it provided reinforcement to the staff and kids for doing an incredible job every day!
On April 12, children at the Center decorated eggs to celebrate Easter and springtime! They had several colors to choose from, stickers, stands, and more! They worked together to come up with new ideas, new colors, and to clean up their areas when finished. They had so much fun!!
On April 14, they planted seeds to teach the concept of growth and patience. The kids planted Marigold and Zinnia seeds for “April showers bring May flowers.” The seeds are growing happily in the windowsill of the office and once sprouted, the kids will take them home or plant them in the flowerbed at the Center! This activity guided them to follow directions carefully, and to think about all the care people need to grow big and strong! It is their responsibility to make sure the seedlings grow big and strong by being caring and compassionate towards others.
