Merakey AVS individuals and staff joined the Pittsburgh Steelers on November 30 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Terrible Towel® during the game against the Buffalo Bills. A group of 56 individuals, staff, family members, and friends were welcomed onto the field before kickoff to wave large 50th-anniversary banners and then stayed to enjoy the game. Throughout the game, video segments highlighting the history of The Terrible Towel played on the jumbotron, while a sea of gold towels filled the stadium.
Created in 1975 by the late Steelers broadcaster Myron Cope to energize fans during a playoff game against the then-Baltimore Colts, The Terrible Towel has become an iconic symbol of Steelers pride. For the past 29 years, proceeds from all Terrible Towel products have supported individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities served by Merakey Allegheny Valley School (M/AVS).
A heartfelt thank you to the Pittsburgh Steelers for honoring Myron Cope’s legacy and for inviting Merakey AVS to take part in this memorable celebration!
