On May 22, the Education Center in Leechburg, PA proudly hosted an engaging and meaningful Art Therapy Expo, led by Clinical Specialist and board-certified art therapist, Kasie L. Zier. The Expo was designed to highlight the power of the art-making process as a therapeutic tool. Unlike traditional art shows that focus on technique or appearance, this event emphasized self-expression, emotional exploration, and the creative process. This approach helped create a safe, non-judgmental space where every student could participate regardless of ability. Throughout the week leading up to the event, students across classrooms participated in hands-on art experiences, exploring creative ways to express themselves. Many students also chose to submit personal artwork, and staff contributions further enriched the exhibit. The Expo culminated in a special event where students proudly shared their work with families and school partners.

A highlight of the day was a collaborative, Jackson Pollock-inspired community art project, inviting students, staff, and families to create together. The experience was described as freeing and cathartic, reinforcing that in art therapy, the process – not the product – is what matters most. As shared by CTYA clinical director Doran Coley, the event offered students a powerful opportunity to find their voice, feel seen, and engage in healing through creativity. The Art Therapy Expo also underscored the potential to expand art-based therapeutic practices to further support youth and families across programs. The Leechburg Art Therapy Expo is a wonderful reflection of the compassionate, innovative work happening each day to support the well-being of our students and families.
