To help students become more aware of the theme for 2023 - Breaking Barriers - the Merakey Education and Autism Center in Harrisburg, PA started with Black History Month. Everyone knows the history and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, but the teachers wanted students to learn about the history makers in their area that helped break barriers for future generations. To show the power of breaking barriers, the students and staff constructed a brick wall in the school with a fist "POW-ing" through the wall, representing barriers that have been broken throughout history by African Americans. The students learned about the 100 Legendary Leaders of Old 8th Ward of Harrisburg, PA, as well as others that helped break barriers in their community.
