Slippery Rock Program Aide Kylie Miller recently took her area to the Eastwood Mall in Boardman, Ohio. Everyone enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the mall in the cool air conditioning. A few individuals shopped for things they wanted, while others loved watching the fish in the giant aquarium. A few enjoyed posing with Scuba Steve. It was a great outing!
Individuals from Slippery Rock Program Center went on community participation trips throughout the week to Steele’s Brushes and Ceramics in Butler, PA for art classes. Steele’s offers discounted classes for those with differing abilities. The individuals enjoyed making a sloth art craft. They chose to attend the classes for the sloth craft to tie into the lessons they had been learning about sloths. Everyone was proud of their work.
Slippery Rock Program Instructor Nikita Flowers and her Aide Shelly Flick took Brooke and Rory to the Butler Farm Show. They had a great time seeing the animals, watching an airplane take off and land, checking out the displays, and indulging in a few goodies from the food stands.

Mary, Shirley, Vicki, Alice, and Carol from Green Garden home at Merakey AVS love to be out and about in their community. They enjoy browsing at Beaver Valley Mall, seeing all the other shoppers and tossing coins into the fountain. They also recently spent a day at the Spillway in Linesville, PA. Mary laughed when a young visitor greeted her, and talked about how big and hungry the ducks were. Alice was vocal and watched many children feeding the ducks and fish beside her. Shirley and Vicki were excited to meet and pet a dog named Reese from Cincinnati. Carol expressed how beautiful the area was and that she enjoyed the weather.
Chris, Eric, and Kenny from Merakey AVS Fox home attended a Special Olympics baseball clinic with the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.
Denise and Marion from Merakey AVS Crestview home enjoyed a picnic lunch at the fish pond at Moon Park. They took in the sights of the fountain and overhead planes, and walked the path around the pond.
Many individuals in Western PA have enjoyed visits to the National Aviary in Pittsburgh this summer. The guys from Windy Ghoul and Wildwood homes checked out the different species of birds.
Consumer Advocacy Group members attended the 30th Annual Knoebels Pride picnic on August 10. Group members gave out free pride flags and bracelets to attendees while explaining Merakey services and available job opportunities.
The Susquehanna Region’s Consumer Advocacy Group participated in the City of Sunbury’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion event on July 19. Members of the group sold pride bracelets, flags, ornaments, and autism awareness bracelets and stickers. Funds from the event will be used towards the Veterans Food Collection they will be starting in September.
