Now that Slippery Rock Program Center’s in-person events are back in full swing, a beloved favorite has started again. “Tony Tunes” occurs on the 3rd Friday of every month for a very enthusiastic crowd of Merakey individuals. Tony Tunes is a sing along led by Instructor Tony Bellassai, which most of the individuals attend. Tony loves having guest singers. Some individuals take the mic and sing, while others play the many instruments Tony brings with him. On occasion, Merakey staff lend their talent to the jamboree. Everyone has a great time singing along and dancing with Tony!
Program Instructor Mary Loos’s area spent last week camping. “Whenever we plan activities, we go all out,” said Mary. Everyone in the area agreed that a camp week would be a great activity. A few minutes after the decision was made, staff asked if they could make a camper. Mary said, “Sure.” Everyone pitched in to create the camper, and the result looked amazing! The group also made lanterns and lightning bugs to add ambience to the scene. The area spent the week camping, making smores, and on the final day, they had a cookout with a picnic lunch. “My staff are amazing,” said Mary, “they make my job fun and exciting, and the individuals love it, too!”
Mary also recently celebrated her 40th anniversary of employment with Merakey AVS! Everyone at Slippery Rock Program Center feel so blessed to have such a talented and caring instructor. Mary puts her all into everything she does, as evidenced by the attention to detail she put into transforming her area into a campsite. “I want to thank my individuals and staff for surprising me with a 40th anniversary party with gifts and a cookie cake. You guys are the best,” exclaimed Mary.
Individuals and staff from Merakey AVS on Verree Road in Philadelphia have been busy this month! The group ventured out for day trips to many fun locations and participated in new activities together. Their recent adventures include a trip to the Philadelphia Zoo to see the animals and walk through the beautiful grounds, a trip to the New Jersey State Aquarium where they enjoyed observing the different sea creatures, and an outdoor art class with Painting with a Twist!
