Caregiver Appreciation Day

In honor of Caregiver Appreciation Day in February, the team at the Kennedy Program Center proudly wore their Caregiver Appreciation shirts. Thank you to CentiMark and Blackburn’s/Har-Kel for generously underwriting these lovely shirts. The support helped make this celebration even more meaningful, and we’re grateful for your commitment to recognizing the incredible work of our caregivers.

“As caregivers, it’s the compassion, dedication, and friendships we build that truly make a difference,” said Assistant Program Director Tom Ford. “We’re not just celebrating the care we give; we’re celebrating the amazing community we’ve built together. And let’s be honest, it’s a lot more fun with all of you!”

Bowling Alley Fun

Mike from Merakey Lincoln home spent the afternoon striking up some fun at the bowling alley.

Balloon Release

The ladies from the Pittsburgh Campus Memory Care Home at Merakey AVS honored the birthday of their late friend with a heartfelt balloon release. Before releasing the balloons in her memory, the residents wrote personal and meaningful messages on them. They spent time reminiscing and celebrating her life with her favorite meal – spaghetti and chocolate cake for dessert. They also sent cards to her sister to let her know they were thinking of her during this time.

Pittsburgh Storm Support

A huge THANK YOU to the staff at Patricia Hillman Miller Campus (PHMC) at Merakey AVS for their efforts during the major storm that hit Pittsburgh the first week in May. The campus was without power for several days and it was all hands on deck from each department to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone at PHMC. Staff members adjusted shifts, created new activities, and worked many long days to keep everything running smoothly.

“There are not enough words to express my sincere appreciation for all of you that helped,” commented PHMC Senior Director Michelle Miller. “This was an unprecedented week for all of us, but with the heart and determination of the staff and our residents, we made it though.”

As a gesture of gratitude, several community partners stepped up to support PHMC employees. A special thank you goes to the Crafton Ingram Rotary, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Association, and Caliente Pizza & Draft House for donating food and showing kindness to those who gave so much.

Happy Anniversary Michael

Michael Franklin, an individual who receives support through Slippery Rock Program Center celebrated his 15th anniversary of employment with North Country Brewing Company in Slippery Rock, PA. His co-workers threw him a surprise party to honor the occasion. Mike was certainly surprised and gave a speech telling everyone how much he loves his job and the people he works with. Michael exclaimed, “It hardly feels like 15 years!”

Spring Miracle League

Play Ball! The Spring Miracle League kicked off this week at Moon Park. Athletes took to the field to hit the ball, run the bases, and hear their names announced. Good luck to the Merakey AVS teams from: Broadhead II, Countryview, Ewings Mill I and II, Fox, Great Oaks, Lincoln, Malcolm, PHMC, Pittsburgh Campus, Nolte, Robinson Smart Home, and Wildwood homes!

The Cranberry Miracle League games will begin next week. Check back for more updates and pictures throughout the season.

Pittsburgh Best Buddies Walk

Genny and Wendy proudly represented Merakey AVS at the Pittsburgh Best Buddies Walk held at Highmark Stadium. Looking ahead, Merakey AVS is excited to partner with Robert Morris University this fall through the Best Buddies program. Eleven individuals from Merakey AVS homes have already signed up to participate, eager to build friendships and engage in activities with local college students. The collaboration marks a significant step towards fostering inclusive communities and creating meaningful opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
