The ladies and staff from Merakey AVS East Gait home spent a fun day at Playthings, Etc. Toy Store and Clearview Mall in Butler, PA. Everyone enjoyed seeing all the toys, and Amy was excited to come home with her very own Anna and Elsa dolls from the movie Frozen.
The Merakey IDD Passion Ambassadors met virtually on April 19 for their monthly Engagement meeting. Participants took a virtual tour of the Slippery Rock Program Center (SRPC) and got to see their gratitude board, positive phrases board, a layout of the program area, and more. The staff at SRPC proudly recognize birthdays, anniversaries, and special achievements, which builds a positive work environment.
Regional Director Jamie Walker led meeting participants in a few laughter activities that they learned from past sessions and team building activities that helped everyone go into the weekend feeling refreshed.
The theme for the April meeting was Kentucky Derby hats, and meeting attendees appeared on screen donning whimsical headwear. Congratulations to the individuals at SRPC for receiving recognition for the most festive hats!
Slippery Rock Program Center Program Instructor Nikita Flowers planned a picnic for her area to celebrate National Picnic Day on April 23. When faced with chilly temperatures on the day of the picnic, she beat the weather woes and brought the planned picnic indoors. Everyone enjoyed grilled hot dogs, potato salad, and other picnic goodies including a crowd favorite: Strawberry Lemonade. After their meal, individuals and staff played indoor versions of baseball and bean bag toss. Everyone had a great time.
Individuals at Slippery Rock Program Center recently planted seeds in honor of Earth Day. The group had the choice to grow the plants for the sensory garden or take their pots home with them. Many chose to grow the plants for the sensory garden. Everyone is looking forward to seeing how beautiful the garden will look once it starts to grow.
A group from the Grove City Road home in Slippery Rock spent the day shopping and enjoyed a nice lunch out at Mill Creek Mall in Erie last week. The highlight of the day was a special stop at the pet shop for some puppy love. The individuals excitedly took turns holding the puppies and gently petting them. One staff member commented that seeing the individuals so happy made it the best day of work he ever had!
Slippery Rock Program Instructors Danielle Mitchell and Bob Graziani brought the individuals they support in their areas to the Air Heritage Aviation Museum in Beaver Falls, PA. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to see planes from the past and fascinating displays of model planes. Individuals were even able to sit inside some of the aircrafts. Several people commented on the history they had learned by being there and how they liked seeing the various planes that were used in past wars. The visit helped bring history to life and allowed people who had never seen a plane before the opportunity to see and touch one.
