WE'RE HIRING!

Several individuals from Merakey AVS attended a virtual Pre-Passover Jewish celebration presented by JOY (Pittsburgh Outreach Initiative).

Rabbi Mordy Rudolph greeted everyone and gave a brief explanation of Passover. Paige Eddy from Friendship Circle discussed the decoration of the Sedar Table and led the group in a craft to make their own Cup of Elisah. Participants had a chance to talk about their favorite Passover memories and share recipes. They ended the celebration by wishing everyone a Happy Passover!

Congratulations Wendy Fobes, Direct Support Professional of the Quarter! Wendy has worked for Merakey AVS for 25 years and was nominated for her teamwork, compassion, and commitment to supporting individuals that she works with. She is praised for her positive outlook towards her co-workers and for transferring that energy to others.

The DSP of the quarter award has been made possible through Steven’s Fund to recognize Merakey Allegheny Valley School Direct Support Professionals in Central PA. The fund was created in 2017 in memory of Steven Garlick by his mother Betsy Friedman. To contribute to the fund, visit avs.merakey.org/donate-now and include “Steven’s Fund” in the “other” and/or “comments / instructions” box.

Individuals have been taking advantage of their passes to the various Pittsburgh museums over the past week. Several small groups went to the Carnegie Science Center and the Museum of Natural History over the past few days. They enjoyed seeing and learning about the various displays. By going in smaller groups, the Slippery Rock Program Center crew has found a way to maximize the time spent in the museums. Both the staff and the individuals greatly appreciate the opportunities the passes give them.

Pittsburgh Museums Visits (April 2024)

The individuals, family visitors, and staff at Merakey AVS Verree Road in Philadelphia welcomed animal friend, Leo, for an inaugural day of Animal Assisted Therapy on April 12. The individuals exhibited increased physical activity as evidenced by their immediate attempts to extend their upper extremities, as able, to connect with Leo. Miranda, a licensed Occupational Therapist, who accompanied Leo, commented on the gentle quality of the physical interactions, demonstrating the individuals’ innate ability to demonstrate caring. Miranda had previously worked with the individuals at the Verree Road campus during her OT internship with Merakey AVS, which was supervised by Rebecca Stressman, OTR/L. The unique experience demonstrated socialization as Leo walked throughout the Apartments interacting with the individuals and staff, respecting boundaries as necessary. Leo and Miranda’s visit provided companionship, joy, comfort, and smiles. Their interactions made magic with warm fur, a wagging tail, and the compassionate ear of a caring canine visitor. Leo delivered a welcomed sense of happiness to everyone on campus.

The Edward J. Zapp Program Center recently hosted a Spring Fling event for Merakey AVS Allegheny and Beaver County group homes. This party marked the first evening event held since the pandemic, offering a much-needed opportunity for everyone to reconnect and celebrate the power of dance. With DJ Joe Ledrick spinning lively tunes, and vibrant decorations enhancing the venue's atmosphere, participants eagerly took to the dance floor. Laughter, smiles, and the rhythmic beat of the music fostered an atmosphere of profound community acceptance and support. And of course, there was cake and other assorted refreshments to sweeten the celebration.
