Helping to Reduce Food Waste

Merakey program participants Billy, Adam, and Chris recently started doing pick-ups and deliveries for a popular Pittsburgh non-profit, 412 Food Rescue. 412 Food Rescue connects volunteers with restaurants and shelters in an effort to reduce food waste. Restaurants sign up when they have excess food that would otherwise be thrown out. Volunteers use a mobile app to schedule a time to pick up the food and deliver it to local shelters or other non-profits. Billy, Adam, and Chris, with the help of their staff, recently picked up and delivered pizzas to a local senior center. They are volunteering as a part of their community integration efforts and as participants in Merakey’s Adult Training Facility in Penn Hills.
