Merakey AVS recently celebrated the retirement of Jan Harvilla, honoring her incredible 41+ years of dedicated service to the individuals at Merakey Allegheny Valley School.

The celebration, hosted by the Edward J. Zapp and Kennedy Program Centers, embraced a lively Monte Carlo theme. Guests enjoyed casino-style games, prize giveaways, and the chance to snap photos with both Jan and a life-size cardboard cutout of her.

In a touching tribute, Jan received several meaningful gifts: a crystal picture frame, two commemorative bricks, a heartfelt memory book filled with photos from over the years, and a well-wish card. Current staff and recent retirees contributed messages and cards filled with appreciation and fond memories. Tony, Kregg, and Billy, whom Jan has supported throughout the years, delivered heartfelt speeches, and John performed the song, “The Gambler” in keeping with the evening’s theme.

Guests also signed a memory book while enjoying celebratory mocktails, freshly baked cookies, and cake. The event was a joyful and memorable send-off for a truly beloved member of the Merakey family.

Executive Director Roni Erath shared, “We will miss Jan. She is a pillar of the foundational core principles at Merakey Allegheny Valley School.”

Happy Retirement, Jan Harvilla! (July 2025)
