August 28, 2026, marks the 30th anniversary of Myron Cope gifting the rights to The Terrible Towel® to Merakey Allegheny Valley School (M/AVS). In 1996, legendary Steelers broadcaster Myron Cope gifted ownership of The Terrible Towel trademark to M/AVS, and since then, royalties from officially licensed “Terrible Stuff” (including towels, cups, ornaments, lapel pins, flags, bibs, cookies, and more) have helped support Merakey AVS.

Created by Myron Cope in 1975 to inspire fan excitement during a Steelers playoff game, The Terrible Towel has become a beloved tradition for Steelers fans around the world.

Over the past 30 years, more than $10 million from officially licensed Terrible Towel products has benefited Merakey AVS. These funds help support equipment, program development, facility renovations, and other needs that enhance the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

So, when you wave your towel, you’re not only cheering on the Steelers; you’re also supporting Merakey AVS!

Join us in celebrating this incredible milestone and kick off the upcoming Steelers season!
