September 8 marked an exciting milestone as Merakey Education Center Philadelphia officially opened its doors to welcome students, families, and staff for the first day of the new school year at the brand new school. The energy throughout the building was inspiring, and this special day would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts, dedication, and commitment of the entire school community.
The team is incredibly proud to begin this school year surrounded by enthusiastic students, supportive families, and an exceptional team of educators and staff. From the moment the doors opened, the school was filled with smiles, laughter, learning, and connection.
The students had an amazing first day. They sang songs, danced, learned their letters, explored the calming corners and sensory rooms, and enjoyed time in the cafeteria. Every moment reflected the welcoming and supportive environment we strive to create for all learners.
A particularly inspiring success story came from one of our second-grade students. During her first day, she demonstrated remarkable skills and determination by:
- Reading and pronouncing words such as jellyfish, squishy, slimy, YouTube, talking, hacks, subscribe, and play.
- Tracing numbers 1 through 20, including hand-over-hand assistance when needed.
- Reading Fry sight words 1 through 10.
- Identifying 20 words with only one prompt.
- Copying and duplicating a block structure twice with accuracy.
Her interests and motivation included YouTube and "Talking Tom," and she confidently demonstrated her technological skills by independently manipulating the Smart Board.
This student's achievements on the very first day of school are a powerful reminder of the potential, talent, and growth our students bring to the classroom each day. Stories like hers reinforce why we are so passionate about the work we do.
