On February 21, Merakey IDD Philadelphia donated an abundance of children’s new and used clothes, shoes, socks, coats, school supplies, car seats, and diapers. They successfully boxed and delivered these items to Cradles to Crayons with the help of 12 middle school age kids. Immediately after delivering the items, eight employees from Merakey Philadelphia IDD volunteered for two hours in the Cradles to Crayons giving center, sorting and making care packages for each individual child according to their specific need. The day was a success and we are thankful to Cradles to Crayons for continuing to provide essential needs.

Childhood poverty is a serious nationwide issue. The average U.S. family in poverty, with two adults and two children, lives on less than $24,000 a year. Without adequate and appropriate clothing, children face unfair barriers and participate in life on an unequal playing field. Cradles to Crayons is a nonprofit that provides everyday essentials for children whose families are experiencing low-income and/or homelessness. Essential items, which Cradles to Crayons provide to them for free, include clothing, shoes, winter coats, books, toys, backpacks, school supplies, and more. Cradles to Crayons uses the term “Clothing Insecurity” as part of their efforts to formally recognize the issue and increase awareness on this hidden basic need.
